Purpose of Position: The job of "Mechanic" is for the purpose/s of determining needed repairs and/or replacements on a vehicle and equipment; ensuring the availability of vehicles and equipment in safe operating condition; and providing written documentation of repairs to meet district, state and federal requirements. Keep the buses/vehicles safe and on the road.
Qualifications:
· High school graduation or equivalent
· Four or more years of experience with heavy-duty truck and or bus service and repair
· Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative manner
· Knowledge and experience of automotive equipment
· Ability to perform preventive maintenance procedures
· Ability to help troubleshoot equipment problems
· Ability to operate various tools and equipment as required
· Ability to lift heavy objects
· Knowledge and experience in maintenance and repair procedures
· Knowledge of safety requirements
· Ability to read and comprehend technical manuals
· Ability to make repairs as required.
· Ability to assist in replacing major assemblies and components
· Professional tact, diplomacy and presentation
· Valid Michigan Commercial Driver’s license with Class B with air and be able to obtain the P&S
endorsements and have a DOT Physical Card
· Must possess certification of completion of required state examinations in all fields of vehicle repair
· Must have own hand tools. Tools up through a) ¾” drive sockets; b) ½” drill bits; c) ½” tap and die’s not including special tools
· Must have adequate health and physical condition to handle all aspects of the job requirements
· Drive school bus if needed
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Diagnoses potential vehicle and equipment malfunctions for the purpose of determining needed repairs and/or replacements
- Executes preventive maintenance programs for the purpose of maintaining vehicles and equipment in safe operating condition
- Maintains tools, equipment, and shop area for the purpose of ensuring the availability and functioning of required tools and equipment within a safe work area
- Prepares documentation (e.g. repairs, maintenance records, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support and/or information to comply with regulating guidelines
- Repairs vehicle and equipment systems/components, etc. for the purpose of ensuring the availability of vehicles and equipment in safe operating condition
- Replaces defective vehicle and equipment parts/systems for the purpose of ensuring the availability of vehicles and equipment in safe operating condition
- Inspects busses and vehicles for the purpose of ensuring conformance to Michigan standards
- Overhauls, repairs, rebuilds or replaces differentials, brake systems and other major components
- Rebuilds/replaces engines and transmissions by repair or replacement within capabilities
- Repairs alternators and other electrical components utilizing testing devises and machine equipment as required
- Performs general tune-ups on all related vehicular equipment
- Makes minor roadside repairs as required
- Repairs and replaces seats, glass, sheet metal, latches, and other body components and assemblies
- Assists or repairs, fill and paint, within capabilities, damaged body components
- Changes oil and filters, installs anti-freeze and snow chains, adjusts brakes, lubricates chassis, wheel bearings and other assemblies, including washing and cleaning of all engines and major components
- Performs all required preventive maintenance and regular bus safety inspections
- Cleans and organizes shop and other maintenance facilities
- Operates battery chargers, compression gauges, torque wrenches, welding equipment with capabilities, grinders, timing lights, hoists, jacks, porta-power, pump, compressors, drilling presses, air wrenches and other tools, equipment and machines required for repair and maintenance of motor vehicles
- Maintain records and inventory
- Be responsible for parts ordering and be aware of budgeted expenses
- Continue furthering knowledge on vehicle repair by attending schools and maintain certifications
- Attend and participate in local and statewide training sessions as required
- As needed for completion of duties, attend meetings outside of normal working hours
- Schedule leave time in a manner that maintains coverage for the full school year
- Always remain free of substance abuse and/or illegal drug use
- Other duties as may be assigned
